This early Blue Period still life of flowers was painted in Paris in 1901. This was the first work by Pablo Picasso to be acquired by the Tate. It was purchased from with Alex Reid and Lefevre, London by the Contemporary Art Society, with its Foreign Fund, and with a grant from the National Art Collections Fund (Art Fund) in 1933 by which time Picasso was a well-established avant-garde artist. It was not until 1965 that the Tate Gallery acquired the synthetic Cubist The Three Dancers (1925), also with help from the CAS.
