Unlike the majority of Stallard's work, which is made from carved marble, Around Zero (1988) was initially made in clay and then cast in fibreglass. He has, however, used versions of this motif in carved works which convey the paradox of a fluid, flowing, abstract form released from the most solid and inert of materials. The inspiration for the piece came from rubber window strips found in a scrap yard.
