Winter Stage (1936) was painted from the loggia at Moatlands Park, the home of Mr and Mrs Cecil Harris, near East Grinstead where Hitchens often painted during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was later to make Sussex his home after his house in London was bombed during WW2 in 1940. He acquired a small area of woodland on Lavington Common (near Petworth) where he initially lived in a caravan before augmenting it with a series of buildings, including an artist’s studio.
