Canal & River Trust Exhibition, London

A selection of artists with very different perspectives and responses to the themes of the Canal & River Trust exhibition series looked at this intriguing environment in a variety of ways, exploring the shifting identity of the British canal network and the culture that surrounds it.

Beneath Hackney Wick’s Eastway, linked directly to Sheldon Square and Paddington’s Westway via the Hertford and Regent’s canals, artists worked side by side in See Studio project space, generating ideas through discussion and experimentation, walking the London canal network and sharing on-going activity through an online blog. Responding to the relocation of the London Paddington Offices in December 2012 to a former canal Toll House nearby, the exhibition existed as and alludes to the notion of a temporary installation in what is a transitional period for Canal & River Trust staff. Through the mediums of fine art, photography, graphic art, illustration and sound recording an intermediate, ephemeral environment will be created in the current location, working with and reacting against the conventions of a contemporary office space, bringing the waterways closer to Canal & River Trust staff.

The work is both a record of collaborative experimentation / exploration and a playful, cohesive and engaging body of work, a vestige of which will live on in the new Canal & River Trust offices.
