There is also a range of 18th and 19th-century work with notable pieces by John Martin, Joshua Reynolds and Holman Hunt. The gallery holds a small collection of modern painting, including works by David Bomberg, Duncan Grant and Ben Nicholson, as well as a number of contemporary pieces by Chris Ofili, Bruce McLean and Glenn Brown.
Over the years Laing has hosted an important programme of contemporary exhibitions, projects and events often working in partnership with other contemporary art organisations. Such collaborations continue to produce inspiring exhibitions.
Once through the gallery shop, which takes up quite a lot of space, you enter the gallery past a huge red Antony Caro sculpture on loan from Tate. Upstairs, the building opens up into light spaces with a really exciting display of historical and contemporary works. Don’t leave Newcastle without a visit!
