POST BOX A parcel’s journey from London E3 5QZ to Barra HS9 5XW
13 January 2011 18:30 — 20:30
Contemporary Art Society 11 — 15 Emerald Street, London. WC1N 3QL

A project by Tim Knowles made in collaboration with the Royal Mail. Launch of the website and book on Thursday 13 January, 18.30 – 20.30 at the Contemporary Art Society.

Royal Mail gave Tim Knowles unique access to its mail delivery system, to create an artwork that captures the topsy-turvy world of a parcel in the post. A specially constructed parcel recorded its 902-mile journey through the postal system from London to the Isle of Barra, in a sequence of 20,000 images, a continuous audio recording and a GPS track. Revealing the unseen world of Royal Mail and how it delivers mail to the farthest corners of the UK.

The artwork consists of a website on which the journey can be followed, and an accompanying book with 155 color photographs selected from the journey. Designed by Knowles it captures a wonderful array of random, abstract images, post office interiors, sorting facilities, people at work, the processing of mail and the many different modes of transport used during its journey. This project forms part of a body of works that have been produced as they travel through the postal system.

POST BOX E3 5QZ – HS9 5XW is a signed artist book in a limited edition of 100. It comes in an especially designed card box in which it is posted.

About the Artist
In his work Tim Knowles is interested in being led by systems he has no control over. In his night walks and wind walks he traces the landscape, making the invisible visible and tangible. With Post Box he gives yet another voice to what tends to be overlooked. As in his Tree Drawings Knowles reaches a wonderful mixture of the poetic, sensitive and anarchist.

Tim Knowles’ work is currently exhibited in the group exhibition Cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione or The Drawing Machines at Gregor Podnar Gallery, Berlin. In 2011 he has solo exhibitions at bitforms Gallery, New York and The Horticultural Society, New York as well as an exhibition presenting a collaboration with Brazilian artist Cadu at Vermelho, Sao Paulo.
