As part of the Kurt Schwitters season in the North West, both Castlefield Gallery and Cube Gallery in Manchester are examining how he continues to inspire creative practitioners today.
At Castlefield Gallery, German artist Ingo Gerken will respond to issue 8/9 of the Merz magazine which Schwitters co-edited with the Russian artist El Lissitsky in 1924.
Drawing on his own highly collaborative approach to making art, Gerken’s physical transformation of the Gallery will include other invited artists’ work.
At Cube, the Office of Subversive Architects (OSA), a crossdisciplinary collective based in London, have chosen a number of works by Schwitters as the inspiration for an interactive installation that will continue to grow over the exhibition period without ever reaching an end — in a similar fashion to the unfinished Merzbau projects.
Join Kwong Lee (Director) and Clarissa Corfe (Curator) at Castlefield Gallery for a tour of Gerken’s response, followed by a visit to Cube to meet with Jane Anderson (Director) and members of the OSA.
