Join us for this Case Study Day on archives and collection engagement taking place at The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Walsall’s Collections Curator Julie Brown will introduce their series of artists’ interventions, exhibitions and residencies around the Garman Ryan Collection and Epstein Archive.

Artists Sarah Taylor Silverwood and Grace Williams will discuss the works they have made in response to this rich collection and the lives of Kathleen Garman and Sally Ryan.

Opening out the discussion, artist Rod Dickinson will talk about the role archival source materials have played in his practice, from large scale installations such as Milgram Re-Enacted and Greenwich Degree Zero to his recent digital work Outlier Detection.

Another perspective on using archives as raw material will be offered by Dr. Cliff Lauson, Curator at the Hayward Gallery. He will give us a preview of the gallery’s current archival project that involves digitising and presenting selections from its fifty years of exhibition history.
