The Contemporary Art Society will host a talk and lead a tour of Frieze London, Frieze Masters and the Frieze Sculpture Park. To ensure you get your passes to the fair it is essential that you RSVP by 19 September 2018.
Following a series of current debates about the interrelations between private philanthropy and public institutions, Frieze Talks and the Contemporary Art Society will lead a participatory event for museums professionals. Many public institutions around the world have been born out of private philanthropy, from the Getty in LA, the Boijmans in Rotterdam, to the Long Museum in Shanghai. In the UK many regional institutions were founded through major donors, for example the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool or the Grundy in Blackpool. However, for many institutions outside major art hubs it has become more and more difficult to access the private sector.
Throughout the seminar we will present possible areas of collaborations within institutions, private collections, commercial galleries and others that consider curatorial research at the heart of their mission. Together with arts professionals from different fields we will discuss the many ways in which the private and the public might intersect. This event is tailored to art professionals.
To make the seminar as rich as possible curators are encouraged to bring an example of a collaboration with the private sector. Topics can include but are not limited to: gifts and bequests, private collections on display in museums, donations and long loans from private collections, collaborations with commercial galleries, commissions for corporate developers, invitations to curate exhibitions in other settings, career changes within the public to the private sector.
