Ferens Art Gallery, Hull: Unwrapped

Future Ferens group
30 October — 9 January 2011
Ferens Art Gallery Queen Victoria Square, Hull HU1

The Ferens Art Gallery is a long standing member of the Contemporary Art Society and is one of the fifteen member museums in England that took part in the Special Collections Scheme. Many of the works in Unwrapped will have been purchased through this ground breaking scheme.

This selection from the collection at The Ferens is by the Future Ferens Group. For over five years the Ferens Art Gallery have been working with students from Hull College and Hull University to develop exhibitions for the galleries from their collections, and over the coming months another exhibition will be conceived by the students in collaboration with the collection curators to make a selection from works gifted by the Contemporary Art Society in recent years.

“We are taking over gallery four to show you some stuff we like. We’re not experts but with a little help from the gallery we have created the whole exhibition from start to finish because we love art, we love Hull, we’ve got loads of opinions, and we are the future.”
Future Ferens

They have made a selection, interpreted the artwork in their own way, and expressed their own thoughts and feelings through poems, opinions, interviews and music. Local musicians were asked by the Future Ferens to compose some music inspired by four of the artworks in the Unwrapped exhibition, and these can be heard on mp3 players around the gallery.

Members of the public are invited to celebrate the official launch of Unwrapped at the Ferens Art Gallery on Thursday 4 November, 19.00 - 22.00, where they can see the exhibition curated by young people, socialise, listen to music, or join the Future Ferens group. There will also be talks by two of the featured artists during the evening:

19.30: Claude Heath
20.30: Alan Currall

Expect to see a broad range of artworks including works by Alan Currall, Patrick Heron, Eduardo Paolozzi, Nina Saunders, Edward Wadsworth and Mark Wallinger.
