The University of Hertfordshire constructed the gallery as part of the new Faculty of Art and Design in 1998. The collection has been built through the acquisition of works from artists exhibiting in the gallery's changing programme of exhibitions, including Andy Goldsworthy and Annette Schröter.
The gallery holds work by alumni of the University and individuals who have taught at the School of Creative Arts. The gallery stages up to fourteen exhibitions a year, of which many include commissions by new artists. Pieces from the permanent collection are displayed throughout the university campus. Once installed the works are not usually moved unless required for conservation reasons.
Editor's note:
This is a university gallery — to visit one must go on to the campus, which is a collection of buildings that host the often frantic activity of higher education. The gallery itself, though generous and welcoming, feels a little like a space one passes through en route to somewhere else. The displays and exhibitions suffer a little because of this but there is a committed, interesting and diverse programme.
