Mercer Art Gallery

Mercer Art Gallery Swan Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 2SA

Originally built in 1806 as Harrogate’s first spa, the building underwent a redevelopment in 1991 to house the town’s collections of Fine Art and Craft.

The collection’s strength lies in its collection of British art of the 19th and 20th centuries, including a number of works by William Powell Frith, Atkinson Grimshaw, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Laura Knight and Alan Davie.

The contemporary galleries continue this emphasis on British art, with works by David Mach and Andy Goldsworthy. The entirety of the collection is not on permanent display but selected works are featured in a diverse exhibition programme throughout the year.

Editor's note:
Located just minutes from Harrogate’s original pump rooms, the Mercer Art Gallery has an understated charm. Once through the pillared Victorian entrance, the main open gallery space is where you will find the permanent collection woven into a temporary exhibitions programme.
