Sovay Berriman is an artist based in London. Recent activity includes the solo exhibition Rising Cities Float (July 2011) at The Agency, London and group exhibitions Strange Loops, (March – April 2011), Generator Projects, Dundee, curated by Craig Mulholland, To Pay Respect to the Generosity of the Three-Minute Punk-Rock Song (November – December 2011), Crate, Margate, curated by Toby Huddlestone as part of Exhibition as Medium, and The Potential for Windows and Scale (September 2011 – January 2012), Contemporary Art Society, London.
Concerned with the dynamics of space in relation to power and the potential of fantasy, Sovay Berriman’s practice considers stage, prop and imagination, choreographing an overall experience by layering ideas through sculpture, drawing, text and event. Individual pieces exist as autonomous objects or activity whilst they also reinforce and extend the space and ideas of other works, allowing the propositions to be observed within a wider perspective and at close proximity.
Current work is involved in the ongoing development of a set of objects - rostra, batons and markers – and their potential interpretation and use. Event and object are brought together, acknowledging performative and structural qualities in both. The work positively attempts to create an heterotopic situation; exploring the possibilities for this and how it can develop.
