The modestly sized drawings are made from an innumerable amount of strokes that form a field not dissimilar to thin washes of paint. Through these semi-botanic surveys, modern imagery is matched by the chosen medium of oil and felt-tip pen. Here the works recreate waves of fluidity, with textures that appear to shimmer. The works form a refreshing take on contemporary drawing practice by utilizing this basic approach to create complex compositions. Presented are semi-abstract plant forms with associations that shift between ideas around good and evil and nature’s concealment. At times, nature disguises itself as harmless but harbours potential toxins, and like the fly warrants itself into the trap, so do we unwittingly take a chance.
The drawings are derived from typical carnivorous plants, such as pitcher plants, using the pitfall, flypaper and snap trap methods to attract and ensnare their prey. These playful and suggestive works on paper echo underlying themes such as opposites, where there is relational play between negative and positive space by employing the use of the silhouette. The system of communication established between artist, object and viewer relies on transient relationships between narrative, mark making and meaning. Incorporating colour, pattern, form and above all texture, each drawing’s explicit narrative is replaced with combinatory relationships.
