statement

"Since 2007 I have been drawing and printing words and phrases through the reconstruction of computer printed lettering by an explicit process of measuring, mapping, annotation and trial and error.

I draw words in Times New Roman, a decision which frees the words from questions of font choice by settling on a typeface which is familiar to the point voicelessness. Time becomes embedded in the work. Metaphor is enthusiastically embraced (the phrases appropriated for Working Towards) or bluntly denied (Words and Actions; Small Histories).

The connection with the aesthetic of plans and blueprints reflects the strange provisionality of language; the thing of which we write, or read, is always elsewhere, deferred in space and time. I like to leave words and phrases floating freely in their spaces, whether screenprinted on paper or drawn directly onto walls.

Language is at its most exciting when it comes upon us unexpectedly and propels us into uncertainty and the uncanny. I try to take language to the brink of such spaces, not through chaos and excess, but through distillation and deliberation."
