biography

Layla Curtis graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1998 and following a year spent living in Japan, where she was Artist in Residence at Akiyoshidai International Arts Village, she returned to the UK to study MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art.

She has undertaken several international residencies, fellowships and commissions including those at Storey Gallery, Kielder Water, London Underground, Westminster City Council and at Ramsgate Maritime Museum in partnership with Turner Contemporary.

Curtis was awarded the Arts Council England International Fellowship to Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey in 2005.

The series of films and drawings created during her three month Antarctic residency were subsequently exhibited at her solo shows at Gimpel Fils, London and the New Art Gallery Walsall and later included in a solo exhibition at Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast in 2008.

Recently she was commissioned by Westminster City Council to make a new body of work and the series of films she created as a result were exhibited at her solo show in London in 2008. She has made several research trips to the Borneo jungle where she plans to return and make work in 2010.

Recent group exhibitions include: Actions: What You Can Do With the City, Centre for Contemporary Architecture, Montreal, Canada; You’ll Never Know, Drawing and Random Interference, Hayward Touring Exhibition, UK; Shifting Ground, Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham, UK and A Bigger Splash: British Art from Tate 1960-2003, Pavilhao Lucas Nogueira Garcez, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Her work features in collections including the Tate Collection, UK; Government Art Collection, UK; The World Bank Collection, USA; Tyne and Wear Museums, UK and The New Art Gallery Walsall, UK.

Layla Curtis currently lives and works in London.
