Karen Tang was featured in Contemporary Art Society's ARTfutures 2005 at Bloomberg SPACE. Karen was commissioned by The Economist, curated by Contemporary Art Society Consultancy, to exhibit at the Economist Plaza in 2006.
Karen Tang’s sculptures and installations are inspired by city life, architecture and science fiction, particularly imaginary spaces and technologies. Her practice emphasises making processes and materials, and considers art and sci-fi to share the fundamental purpose of exploration; perhaps having the ability to comment upon the state of the present by imagining unfamiliar, perhaps future, realities.
A recent outdoor sculpture for the Pumphouse, The Paradise Syndrome, celebrates the eponymous Star Trek episode, using its 'asteroid deflecting obelisk' as a starting point. Chromed panels reflect the sky behind the viewer as they are drawn towards the swirling portal in the middle of the sculpture.
Scopodrome is a sci-fi environment that evokes a parallel planetary zone where fictional futuristic technologies and technorganic workstations are assembled. Hybrid combinations of formal elements offer the viewer a sensory and interactive experience. Scopodrome is a military term meaning the homing pursuit of guided missiles. References included Stanley Kubrick's film Dr Strangelove and J.G. Ballard’s Vermillion Sands. At the Jerwood Space, Modern Molluscs presented a modernist structure based on a section of Le Corbusier’s Unité d'habitation, invaded by fantasy sea creatures.
