biography

Helen Sear’s photographic practice has developed from a Fine Art background of performance, film and installation work made in the 1980s.

Sear's photographs became widely known in the 1991 British Council exhibition, De-Composition: Constructed Photography in Britain, which toured Latin America and Eastern Europe. Her work explores ideas of vision, touch, and the representation of the nature of experience, combining drawing, lens-based media and digital technologies.

Sear's work was included in About Face at the Hayward Gallery, London (2004) and La Mirada Reflexiva at the Espai D’Art Contemporani in Castellon Spain (2005). A 90-page monograph Twice was published by Zelda Cheatle Press (2002), and Grounded was a touring exhibition curated by Impressions Gallery, York (2003-05).

Recent solo exhibitions include Crescent Arts, Scarborough (2011), Inside The View,Gallery Harmonia, Finland (2006) and Klompching Gallery, New York (2009). She has recently shown video works and a new installation at g39, published a bookwork Tale with the same gallery and had a solo exhibition with Hoopers Gallery, London.

Helen will launch her major new monograph Helen Sear - Inside The View published by Ffotogallery, Cardiff on Thursday 26 April at the Contemporary Art Society offices in Emerald Street, London. Helen is currently Reader in Photography and Fine Art Practice and a member of the European Centre for Photographic Research at the University of Wales Newport.
