Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 with a First-Class Honours and was awarded an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998.
Hadzi-Vasileva is a site-specific/installation artist working across varied media including sculpture, video and sound installations, photography and architectural interventions. She produces ambitious and complex works by responding to the particularities of a given location, be it in terms of industry, community or (natural) environment.
Her work offers the viewer an expansive sensory experience in terms of scale, fragility and physicality. The use of materials from the ‘natural’ world (such as trees, water, fish, bones, animal skins, watercress and butter), make smell—commonly associated with memory—an active part of experiencing her installations.
Rather than relying on established practice and mediums with which Hadzi-Vasileva is familiar with, new methods and procedures are developed for each work, using materials linked to the specific environments. While this is challenging and occasionally highly risky, it encourages her to propel her ideas forward into new avenues and makes each artwork unique, while also offering the opportunity for surprise and astonishment in both herself and the audience.
Unencountered spaces and the exploration of these are an integral part of Hadzi-Vasileva’s work, through which she aspires for a resonance with a fable or fairly story, a suggestion of promised Arcadias or Utopias which are unattainable, thereby hoping to encourage a sublime experience for the visitor.
